The Logitech gamepad was a close second, but I got this one for an awesome price. And a lot of games automatically recognize it. I love how I can hook up the actual Xbox controller a friend gave me to the same wireless dongle. I shopped around a LOT, and I ended up with the Microsoft Wireless Xbox Controller for Windows.

Seriously, it only take 1 hour for an experienced developer, I know because I did it myself. I seriously have my doubts x360 gamepads are the most widely used, it's just that MS like to force their stuff to be sold instead and lazy developers don't want to spend 1 more hour to support dinput8.dll. Yeap, it sucks, yeap, it'd be better if non-xinput gamepads were supported. Industry embraced it, and now you whine because all of a sudden you've become a minority (that's the point why devs don't support it).

Xinput is industry standard since windows NT 6.0 kernel revision (so called Vista) and DirectX 10.0, even modern steering wheels use it now. If it's not - take your whinning to your controller vendor's tech support.

You can use any effin' controller you want, just make sure it is xinput-compatitible. This is a racing game, it should support a steering wheel. Not having an xBox controller not only locks out split-screen multiplayer, but it also means that you can't get one of the achievements (which requires this locked out feature to obtain). That's why DirectX was created to supply a uniform way for hardware to communicate to software, therefore support majority of hardware (ie: controllers). If you do not want to get a cheap wired xbox 360 controller (official or otherwise they work the same) there is a free program available called X360ce that will emulate your PC gamepad as if it were a 360 gamepad and tricks the game into thinking this and unlocks the mode. They are more widely available than traditional PC gamepads and are easily utilized multi-platform as the xbox 360 was built with windows in mind. Most PC games these days that use controllers at all use only the 360 pad because it's the chosen microsoft standard now.
